The team omitted the name of Rice specifically in their announcement and stated they would have “no further comment at this time”.

Player's Prior Off-Field Troubles
The receiver was absent for the first six games of this NFL campaign due to an league-mandated ban for his role in instigating a crash on a Dallas highway that left several individuals injured. Rice was given 30 days in jail and five years’ probation after entering a guilty plea to felony charges.
Statistically, he finished the year with 53 catches for 571 yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs finished 6-11 and failed to qualify for the postseason for the first occasion in a ten-year span.
