Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
